Elena Walch: An Innovative Winery Representing Alto Adige

Alto Adige, Italy's northernmost wine region, lies at the foot of the Alps. The gentle Mediterranean sunshine and the dramatic temperature differences between warm days and cool nights at high altitudes create wines of unique tension and elegance. While the region's total wine production accounts for less than 1% of Italy's, it boasts the highest proportion of DOC wines in the country, establishing itself as a premier region for high-quality wines.
It is here that Elena Walch has elevated the quality standards of Alto Adige wines to a new level.
Elena Walch is not just a family-run winery.
It is a symbol of innovation that has gained international recognition for showcasing the potential of Alto Adige to the world.
The Revolution Initiated by Young Architect Elena Walch
In the 1980s, when young architect Elena Walch married into the long-established Walch family of Tramin, no one expected her to bring about such significant changes to the Alto Adige wine world.
However, with strong conviction, Elena set out to produce wines without compromising on quality.
She focused on "terroir-driven character" rather than "quantity."
She was quick to recognize the value of single vineyards, which had not been given sufficient attention until then, and pursued winemaking that more deeply reflected the Alto Adige terroir.
Her innovations eventually raised the quality standards across the entire region, and the name Elena Walch became known worldwide as a representative of Alto Adige.
Single Vineyards Reflecting Unique Terroir

Elena Walch's quality is underpinned by two iconic single vineyards: "Castel Ringberg" and "Kastelaz."
Overlooking Lake Caldaro, the 20-hectare "Castel Ringberg" is Elena Walch's monopole (single-owner vineyard), featuring a Renaissance-style castle built by the Habsburgs in 1620. This vineyard produces numerous award-winning wines that are mineral-rich and elegant.
Meanwhile, "Kastelaz" is a special vineyard spread across a steep, south-facing slope overlooking the village of Tramin. With an elevation of 330-380 meters, a 63-degree incline, limestone soil, and significant day-night temperature differences, it possesses the finest conditions in Alto Adige.
By maximizing the unique characteristics of these two exceptional vineyards, Elena Walch continues to produce "wines that speak of the land."
A Cellar Where History and Innovation Coexist

Elena Walch's cellar is a historic space housed in a former Jesuit monastery.
Within this space, featuring hand-carved large barrels, French barriques, and temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, tradition and innovation beautifully coexist.
In 2015, the fermentation cellar was restored, and a gravity-flow system with multiple sorting stations was introduced. This created an environment where grapes are handled without unnecessary stress, allowing their delicate characteristics to be faithfully reflected in the wine.
A Family Philosophy of Coexistence with Nature
For Elena Walch, sustainability is more than just an initiative.
It is the very philosophy that underpins their winemaking.
In the vineyards, they prioritize harmony with nature, practicing viticulture with respect for the soil, microclimate, and ecosystem. In recent years, they have also developed new vineyards at altitudes of 600m and 1000m to seek higher acidity, striving for quality improvement while adapting to climate change.
The beautiful tension found in Elena Walch's wines stems from this deep respect for nature.
Winemaking Passed Down to the Daughters

Today, the winery is led by daughters Julia and Karoline. Carrying on the family's philosophy and commitment to quality alongside Elena, they continue to evolve, garnering global attention for the delicate and elegant wines crafted by these women.
Elena Walch's challenge continues from Alto Adige into the future.
