FRESCOBALDI Brand Story

FRESCOBALDI: A prestigious winery sharing the diversity of Tuscany with the world

The Frescobaldi family has walked hand-in-hand with the history of Tuscany for over 1000 years. Their winemaking history spans more than 700 years, and today they are known as a leading global wine producer in Italy.

During the medieval heyday of Florence, they held significant influence as bankers managing the finances of the English royal family. In the Renaissance, they also supported arts and architecture. They are a prominent family that has not only supported wine but Tuscan culture itself.

Currently, under the leadership of the 30th generation head, Lamberto Frescobaldi, they continue to uphold the traditions and philosophy passed down through generations, pursuing "winemaking that brings the diversity of Tuscany to the world."

The Frescobaldi Family's 1000-Year History

The earliest records of the Frescobaldi family date back to the 10th century. Since then, as a prominent Florentine family, they have played a significant role in various fields including politics, finance, art, and culture.

In the 14th century, they contracted with King Edward I of England and later Henry VIII to supply wine to the English royal family. To this day, they maintain a deep connection with the British monarchy.

They also had a close relationship with the poet Dante Alighieri, and it is said that the existence of his close friend Dino Frescobaldi led Dante to complete "The Divine Comedy" after his exile from Florence.

In the 15th century, the Santo Spirito Church was built by the architect Brunelleschi, and in the 16th century, even Michelangelo, Donatello, and Pope Leo X enjoyed Frescobaldi wines.

FRESCOBALDI's Winemaking Spanning Across Tuscany

Frescobaldi currently owns distinctive estates across Tuscany, and their winemaking history dates back over 700 years.

Nipozzano in Chianti Rufina, Pomino known for white wines, Castelo Giocondo in Montalcino, Castiglioni in Montespertoli, Ammiraglia in Maremma, Perano in Chianti Classico, and Remole in Sieci.

These seven estates, each with different climates, soils, altitudes, winds, and light, produce wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their respective lands.

Furthermore, Frescobaldi is involved in global projects such as "Ornellaia" and "Masseto" in Bolgheri, and "Luce" in Montalcino, receiving high acclaim as a leading name in the Italian wine industry.

Nipozzano

Nipozzano Castle, a fortress protecting Florence since the 1000s AD, is located in the heart of Chianti Rufina, a renowned wine-producing area east of Florence, situated on the slopes overlooking the Arno river valley.

At an altitude of 400m, with cool and breezy vineyards, a perfectly balanced microclimate provides ideal conditions for various grape varieties to grow perfectly.

In 1855, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot were planted here for the first time in Tuscany. The large temperature difference between day and night brings rich aromas and firm acidity to the grapes.

The result is a highly potential wine with elegant, pleasant tannins, outstanding acidity, and a complex bouquet of berry and spice aromas, capable of long-term aging.

Pomino

Pomino Castle is located in the Apennine Mountains east of Florence, surrounded by a beautiful landscape of coniferous forests.

The vineyards are situated at 737m, the highest altitude in Tuscany, enjoying a refreshing and breezy microclimate. In 1716, Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici documented the four most highly regarded wine regions in Tuscany, which served as a precursor to the modern DOC (Denomination of Origin Control) system. The Pomino region (including Nipozzano) was listed alongside Chianti, Carmignano, and Val d'Arno di Sopra.

This indicates how important the wines from this region were economically and how high their quality was even then.

In 1855, Lady Leonia introduced grape varieties that were uncommon at the time, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, to this region. At the 1878 Paris Exposition, Pomino wines were awarded the gold medal, the highest honor at the time. It is known as a prestigious region for very fine and elegant white wines.

Castel Giocondo

One of the first four producers to start making Brunello di Montalcino in the 1800s, it has consistently produced powerful wines with high terroir potential, elegance, and vitality for the past 200 years.

Located southwest of Montalcino, it enjoys an ideal terroir for Sangiovese and the great wines produced here.

The vineyards are at an ideal altitude of 300-400m, with well-drained soils and sunny southwest-facing slopes. Grapes are cultivated with meticulous care, resulting in great Brunello wines with elegant textures and excellent aging potential.

Castiglioni

Castiglioni, the first land where the Frescobaldi family began winemaking, is located in the hills of Val di Pesa, southwest of Florence.

The fertile and diverse soil, composed of rock and clay, provides ideal conditions for cultivating elegant Sangiovese, as well as powerful and vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

It enjoys a microclimate with warm and dry days, followed by a gentle breeze from the Tyrrhenian Sea in the afternoon. Here, grapes ripen earlier and more consistently than elsewhere, resulting in wines with concentrated fruit flavors and a smooth, refined structure.

Ammiraglia

Approximately 20km from the sea, the vineyards of the Ammiraglia Estate, located in the heart of Tuscany's Maremma region, trace geometric patterns on the hills leading down to the Tyrrhenian Sea.

In this area, the amount of sunlight and light reflected from the ground reaches its highest levels, and combined with the cooling sea breeze, it creates an extremely suitable environment for grape maturation.

To complement the unique characteristics of this land, the estate has a reservoir, which is utilized to ensure the land does not dry out during the driest periods of the year. Influenced by the Mediterranean, sun, and sea breeze, modern Tuscan wines with fresh, mineral-rich, and luscious fruit flavors are produced here.

Tenuta Perano

Tenuta Perano, Frescobaldi's newest estate, is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, in an amphitheater-shaped vineyard naturally formed with southwest-facing slopes at an altitude of 420-650m in "Gaiole in Chianti."

Its unique bowl-shaped topography benefits from collected warmth and sunlight, and it enjoys an ideal diurnal temperature range with warm southerly winds during the day and cool mountain winds in the evening. The soil is rich in stones and contains clay, silt, local Chianti Alberese and Galestro marl, and chalky sandstone. With an ideal slope of 15-20 degrees, it provides excellent drainage and air circulation, creating a dry environment ideal for vine health.

With the aim of "obtaining the best and finest from the natural state of the plants," this natural heritage is maintained with minimal human intervention. Green manure is used as fertilizer, and indigenous yeasts are used in the winery's fermentation process, reflecting the pure essence of this land in the wine.

Remole

The Remole Estate, surrounded by vineyards, is a precious place where the family's important history and treasures rest, and it has watched over the growth of successive Frescobaldi generations.

Remole Estate wines are cheerful and sociable, easy to enjoy. They pair well with a variety of dishes from East to West, making them the perfect accompaniment for time with family and friends, tables laden with feasts, and casual everyday moments.

These lively wines embody the Tuscan lifestyle, with pleasant fruity aromas that transport you to the uniquely beautiful Tuscany.

The World of FRESCOBALDI, where History, Art, and Wine converge

In 2020, Frescobaldi was selected as the top winery among over 2500 in Italy's most prestigious wine guide, "Gambero Rosso."

Frescobaldi is not merely a winemaker. Through art patronage (patronage) and cultural and social activities dating back to the Middle Ages, they play a role in passing on Tuscan culture itself to the future.

They also actively engage in social activities that connect people and land, such as a wine project conducted in Gorgona Island Prison (a rehabilitation program).

To deliver the culture of the land, people's lives, history, and nature to the world through wine—.

That is Frescobaldi's mission.
