Product Details
Syrah is a noble Mediterranean grape variety well-suited to dry, sunny regions like Sicily. For this reason, Planeta is confident in the potential and future of this variety. The historic and picturesque Marroccoli vineyard, located at an altitude of 400m, cultivates a modern style of Syrah while preserving the varietal's unique character.
Classification: Menfi DOC
Grape Variety: 100% Syrah
Tasting: As expected from a year blessed with ideal climatic conditions, this wine is characterized by a balanced fruitiness and structure. Previously, it showed harmonious nuances of black cherry, plum, licorice, and spice, elegantly expressing the varietal's character. Now, with aging, notes of cacao, leather, and dried herbs have developed, and the tannins have become silkier. The acidity firmly supports the wine's structure, revealing a classic and calm expression with a long finish.
Production Method: After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and crushed, and the must is transferred to stainless steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation. Depending on the stage of fermentation, short pump-overs (circulation) are performed twice a day for 12-18 minutes, gently extracting complexity from the wine while minimizing stress on the skins. The fermentation period gradually increases in temperature, starting at 14-15°C, reaching 20-22°C temporarily, and finishing at 25-27°C, with cooling at the final stage. After alcoholic fermentation, the tank is filled with wine from the same vineyard, and ceramation (skin contact) continues for 18-20 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine is transferred to French oak barrels and aged for 14 months. Allier oak barrels are used for aging (35% new barrels, 35% second-year barrels, 30% third-year barrels).
Pairing: Roasted lamb, game, beef, aged cheeses.
