Product Details

Syrah is a noble Mediterranean grape variety well-suited to dry, sun-drenched regions like Sicily. For this reason, Planeta is confident in the potential and future of this variety. The historic and beautiful Marroccoli vineyard, located at an altitude of 400m, cultivates Syrah in a modern style while preserving the unique character of the variety.

Classification: Menfi DOC

Grape Variety: 100% Syrah

Tasting Notes: Deep ruby color. Aromas of ripe plum and blackcurrant, with subtle hints of spice and tobacco. Full-bodied, with smooth tannins that harmonize with the fruit flavors, creating a rich taste. The finish is long, with dark chocolate and vanilla, making for an elegant and complex vintage. This year saw an intense heatwave. It is characterized by dry and crisp tannins.

Production Method: After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and crushed, and the juice is transferred to stainless steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation. Depending on the stage of fermentation, short pump-overs (circulation) are performed twice a day for 12-18 minutes, which helps to develop the complexity of the wine while slightly reducing stress on the skins. The fermentation period is approximately 12-14 days. The temperature is gradually increased from 14-15°C initially, to 20-22°C for a period, and then to 25-27°C at the end, before being cooled down in the final stage. After alcoholic fermentation, the tanks are filled with wine from the same vineyard, and maceration (skin contact) is carried out for 18-20 days, after which the wine is racked. Malolactic fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for 14 months of aging. Aging uses Allier oak barrels (35% new barrels, 35% second-use barrels, 30% third-use barrels).

Pairing: Lamb, game, roasted beef, aged cheeses
