Syrah is a noble Mediterranean grape variety well-suited to dry, sunny regions like Sicily. For this reason, Planeta is confident in the potential and future of this variety. The Marroccoli vineyard, which retains its excellent traditional landscape, is located at an altitude of 400m, cultivating a modern style of Syrah while preserving the varietal character. This wine has great potential and is suitable for long-term aging.
Rating: Menfi DOC
Grape Variety: 100% Syrah
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby red with a purplish hue. Rich aromas of red fruits, such as fig liqueur and cherry. This is followed by notes of cocoa, vanilla cream, and spices like cinnamon and white pepper. It has a mellow texture with a pleasant warmth from the alcohol, and velvety tannins give the wine depth and structure. This modern style Syrah, which respects the varietal character, has great potential and is suitable for long-term aging.
Production Method: After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and crushed, and the juice is transferred to stainless steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation. Depending on the fermentation stage, pumping over is performed twice a day for a short duration of 12 to 18 minutes, minimizing stress on the grape skins while extracting complexity from the wine. Fermentation lasts approximately 12 to 14 days. Temperatures are gradually increased from 14-15°C initially, to 20-22°C in the middle, and finally to 25-27°C at the end, at which point cooling is stopped to complete fermentation. After alcoholic fermentation, the tanks are filled with wine from the same vineyard, and maceration with the skins takes place for 18-20 days before racking. Malolactic fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, after which the wine is transferred to French oak barrels for 14 months of aging. Allier oak barrels are used for aging (35% new barrels, 35% second-use barrels, 30% third-use barrels).
Pairing: Roasted lamb, game, beef, aged cheeses
